What is FDM?

FDM or Fascial Distortion Model is a method of identifying pain in the body. Your body consists of fascia which are thin connective tissues surrounding your organs, muscles, joints, and other internal body parts. FDM works to target these soft tissues and identify where the pain of the injury is located. Through different types of deep pressure applications, an injury can be reversed, with a shorter recovery period. This treatment model is highly preferred by athletes and others with sports injuries who are looking to get back on the field in no time.

6 Types of Fascial Distortions

There are six different types of fascial distortions identified in the FDM model. Each type of distortion focuses on a different part of the body and the injury type commonly associated with that region.

  • Triggerband: one of the most common distortions we see at the clinic. This distortion typically consists of wrinkled or twisted fascia that causes burning pain in the body.

  • Herniated Trigger Points: Patients usually complain of deep aches when they’re experiencing herniated trigger points. This occurs when the soft tissues have pushed through the surrounding fascia.

  • Continuum Distortion: continuum distortions are commonly seen in sprained ankles and other joints.

  • Folding Distortion: When fascia contract incorrectly around your joints, you experience folding distortions. Dr. Pete of Carrollton, GA describes this distortion as aching joint pain.

  • Cylinder Distortion: Like the name, cylinder distortions consist of coils of fascia overlapping similar to a cylinder. These distortions are apparent around non-jointed areas in the body and result in tingling or numbness symptoms.

  • Tectonic Fixation: If you’re experiencing tightness or stiffness in your body, it may be a tectonic fixation. This distortion relates to the fascia’s inability to glide smoothly.
