What is Musculoskeletal Pain?

We’re proud to offer non-invasive, non-addictive, complementary pain relief at the Carrollton Chiropractic office of Dr. Peter Lazarnick (Dr. Pete). Joint disorders, and especially lower back pain, are extremely common, but can often be soothed with holistic therapies. However, to treat musculoskeletal pain, we have to recognize it, which is why this week’s blog post is dedicated to describing how musculoskeletal pain manifests.

It is important to understand that pain can be referred to the musculoskeletal system from other organs. Pain that originates in the musculoskeletal system tends to have distinct traits. Muscle, tendon, and ligament pain is usually sharp when caused by acute injuries and worse when the patient is in certain positions. Bone pain feels more intense and penetrating. Joint pain is often described as aching and is usually present both when the joint is in motion or resting, although it may be worse while in motion. Bursae pain is usually worse when a person is moving.

When a part of the musculoskeletal system is inflamed or dislocated, it may compress a nerve. This could cause pain to shoot along the nerve, or for the nerve to tingle or go numb. To determine the cause of a patient’s pain, we’ll do imaging, tactile, and range-of-motion tests. In addition to chiropractic adjustments to correct dislocated joints, we may also recommend anti-inflammatory treatments such as soft tissue manipulation and lifestyle changes to improve muscle strength and flexibility.
