Importance of Vitamin D

As the days get shorter, we at the Carrollton chiropractic office of Dr. Peter Lazarnick (Dr. Pete) want to remind our patients of the importance of Vitamin D. This nutrient, made in the skin in response to sunlight, is what allows our body to absorb calcium and build strong bones. It is essential for the prevention of osteoporosis and related problems such as hyperkyphosis (extreme forward curvature of the spine).

Our bodies do not produce their own calcium. We absorb it from what we eat. Vitamin D turns on and off our body’s ability to absorb calcium, although few people in modern America are at risk of absorbing too much. But lack of calcium is a common problem, and the reason is that many people do not get enough sunlight for their bodies to manufacture Vitamin D.

There are other sources of Vitamin D. It can be found in fatty fish oil, egg yolks, and beef liver, and both it and calcium are commonly supplemented in breakfast cereal, milk, plant-based milk substitutes, and orange juice. But as little as fifteen minutes of sunlight three times per week may provide stimulation for sufficient Vitamin D production. People with darker skin or who are older may require a little more. Remember, the exposure must be direct, not through glass.
