Preventing Neck Pain

Neck pain is one of the most frightening spinal ailments. After a problem has been treated, patients will be more vulnerable to relapses, which is why it’s important for them to follow instructions to improve their lifestyle. To assist with our patients’ preventive care, we at Dr. Peter Lazarnick’s (Dr. Pete’s) Carrollton office wanted to provide some quick tips.

Although an injury can result in whiplash, most neck pain is degenerative, having been caused by wear and poor posture over time. People are particularly likely to develop chronic neck pain if they spend a large amount of time looking down at computer monitors or at the road. Frequently changing positions can keep the neck tendons from shortening. Office workers would also do well to make sure their screens are at eye level and their feet are flat on the ground.

Patients are also advised to make sure they are getting eight hours of sleep each night and to sleep in a spine-friendly position. Many pillows are made with a neck-support ridge that will allow the ligaments and muscles to relax. Patients may also want to get assessed for temporomandibular joint disorder, in which neck muscles can be strained by constant, subconscious jaw clenching. Chiropractic adjustments can relieve pressure from the cervical spine’s facet joints and spinal decompression treatment can take pressure of spinal discs. We can also advise patients on exercises that will make their neck muscles stronger and more flexible.
